Supplier Assessment
Supplier Due Diligence for Agricultural Sourcing in Egypt
Due diligence should answer a practical question: can this supplier consistently deliver the product, standard, documentation and communication your programme requires? A certificate list alone is not enough, and neither is a good first sample.
Understand who performs each part of the supply chain
The grower, packhouse and exporter may be the same business or separate parties. Map the relationships so it is clear who controls production, packing, quality release, documentation, invoicing and logistics.
Verify capability against your own specification
Ask for evidence relevant to the actual programme: crop/variety, expected volume, grading capability, packaging, traceability, certification where required, cold-storage or pre-cooling capability and previous experience with comparable destination markets.
Assess communication as an operational capability
Fresh-produce problems often become expensive when information arrives late. Responsiveness, clear escalation routes, accurate production updates and willingness to document agreed actions are important supplier-selection criteria.
Start appropriately
Where practical, a controlled trial or smaller initial programme can help validate packing, documentation, communication and arrival performance before larger commitments are made.
Ask about supplier identification
