UK Importing
Importing Fresh Produce from Egypt to Great Britain: Commercial Planning
An Egypt-to-Great-Britain programme needs more than product and freight. Importers should confirm the current plant-health risk category, any phytosanitary and pre-notification requirements, applicable fresh-produce marketing standards, customs responsibilities and the product’s cold-chain needs before shipment.
Check the exact commodity requirements
UK plant-health controls are risk based, so requirements can differ between commodities and can change over time. Depending on classification, a consignment may require a phytosanitary certificate and, for certain risk categories, pre-notification through the relevant UK system. Importers should check the current official requirement for the exact commodity and origin before loading.
Marketing standards are separate from plant health
Fresh fruit and vegetables imported into Great Britain may also be subject to quality and labelling rules known as marketing standards. These requirements are distinct from phytosanitary controls, so a consignment can need attention to both.
Agree responsibilities before shipment
Importer of record, customs representation, Incoterms, documentary responsibility, inspection arrangements, demurrage risk and who controls release of the goods should be understood before the product leaves Egypt.
Protect the cold chain
For perishable produce, paperwork is only one part of compliance. Harvest maturity, pre-cooling, packing temperature, container set-point, ventilation, transit time and expected arrival condition should be aligned with the product and specification.
Use current official guidance
Regulatory requirements can change. Midori Agriculture can help coordinate the commercial and supplier side of a programme, but the importer and its appointed customs/plant-health specialists should always verify current UK requirements with official sources for the specific consignment.
